Gadgets which have become Obsolete
The rotary dial, mounted on telephones were once a common sight, which used holes on the finger plate in order to dial a number. The first patent for rotary dial was received by Almon Brown Strowger. There were numerous competing inventions and in 1059s plastic dials replaced the metal ones. Based on the Strowger's patented designs, the first commercial installation of a 99-line automatic telephone exchange took place. With improvements in design, the rotary dial was dethroned by the Dual-tone multi-frequency push-button technology, which uses a keypad instead of the rotary dial. Some telephone systems in the U.S. no longer recognize rotary dialing, and support only the push-buttons, by default.
