HD DVD
Toshiba lost almost $1 billion while supporting the HD DVD format, before finally parting ways with it in 2008. HD DVD, launched in 2006, was primarily funded by Toshiba and NEC, but lost out to Sony's Blu-ray, which had a better performance than HD DVD. Toshiba cited the reasons for the failure of HD DVD to be the increasing downloads of digital videos, which were freely available on the Internet. Sony which owned the largest studio, promoted Blu-ray, and that made HD DVD sit on the back burner, till the point Wal-Mart stopped offering the HD DVD-compatible formats.
