RIM's Foray into the Consumer Market
Five Controversial Wireless Business Ideas
Research In Motion's (RIM) decision to move into the consumer market with its Blackberry Curve and Pearl, which saw it reign the market before the iPhone era. The Blackberry became an instant hit and as a status symbol for the businessmen. The move not only boosted the revenue, but also made the company broaden its market. RIM could afford to keep a high price tag for the Blackberry, which led to the iPhone and the cheaper versions of Android powered phones creeping into the low segment, eating RIM's share. The flexibility offered by the Android and the growing popularity of iPhone are the biggest threats to RIM, which is trying very hard to come up with a match to the status of Apple and performance of Android. RIM has also ventured into the low-segment by slashing the price of its Blackberry Curve, to make it affordable to the college-goers in attempt to snatch its crown from Apple and reign the smartphone market again.
