SSTL expanding mobile coverage across India
Bangalore: Sistema Shyam Tele Services (SSTL) has planned to expand its business to all the 22 circles across India under the MTS brand by end of 2009. Presently, SSTL offers its services in Rajasthan, Tamilnadu and Kerala. Company has already got the licenses and spectrum to provide mobile telephony services in all these 22 circles. Shalini Wadhwa, Corporate Communication Director, SSTL says, "We can't disclose the month of launching in the cities like Delhi and Bangalore but we are on schedule for these launches." MTS is the largest mobile phone operator in Russia and the Commonwealth Independent States (CIS). It provides mobile communications in Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia and Belarus, the territory with a total population of more than 230 million. With the aim of becoming leading telecom provider and keeping the IT infrastructure environment-friendly, company has tied up with IBM to build green data center in Chennai and Gurgaon. This move has been taken to support SSTL's pan India expansion plans for offering telephony services. The green data centers will help SSTL achieve 20 percent energy savings. Vsevolod Rozanov, President and CEO, Sistema Shyam TeleServices said, "As a global telecom player with ambitious expansion plans for the Indian market, we are aware of the advantage of adopting energy-efficient operational measures and in the process will work proactively to reduce global energy emissions." The data centre solution being deployed by IBM will provide the facility to scale power and cooling automatically depending on the load. IBM will also build a Network Operations Centre (NOC) to help the SSTL team monitor and manage applications and network in a 24/7 environment. Shanker Annaswamy, Managing Director, IBM India said, "SSTL's adoption of green and energy-efficient technologies will help them optimize their resources while serving their growing customer base across India." India's telecom service provider Bharti Airtel has been working very closely with IBM for all its green IT initiatives, especially its data center and application needs. Bharti has one of the largest data center set-ups in the telecom industry and now is in the process of building additional ones to serve the increasing demand for hosted services from enterprises. While talking about company collaborating with any renewable energy company to meet the huge demand of power, Wadhwa said, "As of now, we have not thought of this but in future carbon credits can be one of the options to meet the power demand." SSTL is a joint venture company between Sistema of Russia and Shyam Group of India. Sistema is the majority share holder in SSTL with a 74 percent equity stake in it. The Shyam Group holds a 23.5 percent stake while the rest 2.5 percent is with public.
