Bangalore: Sprint will soon start selling its first line of mini-personal computers in a handful of metro areas, following moves by wireless rivals AT&T and Verizon Wireless into the netbook arena. Carriers have made a push into devices beyond cellphones this year amid increasing mobile competition.
According to the Wall Street Journal, reviving its wireless business is particularly important for Sprint, as it shed more than 500,000 subscribers in the third quarter and saw wireless revenue fall by eight percent. Verizon Wireless and AT&T, in contrast, added customers over the same period.
The device, a Dell Inspiron Mini 10, will cost $200 plus a two-year data contract, which starts at $60 a month, on Sprint's network. It will be available at Sprint retail stores in the Bay Area, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, St. Paul and Phoenix. Also available through AT&T, it has a 160-gigabyte hard drive and weighs 2.6 pounds.
A Sprint spokesman however said that the company hasn't announced any other netbook offerings but that it 'continually reviews its device portfolio to remain competitive in the marketplace.'
