Bangalore: Sony plans to capture 20 percent of the Indian consumer notebook market, which is expected to touch 900,000 units in the current financial year. Currently, the notebook market in India is estimated at 800,000 units. "We currently have 8-9 percent market share in India, with our new strategies, we would like to increase our market share in the coming months," said Sachin Thapar, Division Head, IT, Gaming and Mobile Business at Sony India. To achieve its target of 20 percent market share, the company plans to introduce new product designs, expand its network and carry out aggressive marketing initiatives. As a part of this, the company has recently launched its latest notebook in India, the VAIO X. Sony claims that this is the lightest notebook available in the market, weighing 655 grams. "Compared to a MacBook Air, which weighs 1360 grams, VAIO X is 50 percent lighter," says Thapar. According to him, the VAIO X is also slimmer at 13.9 millimeter (mm), compared to the Mac's 19.4 mm thickness. As a part its channel expansion, Sony plans to have its presence in across 200 Indian cities, by opening over 1000 outlets by the end of next financial year. At present, the company is present in 100 cities with a total of 500 outlets in these cities. Sony has signed on Kareena Kapoor as its brand ambassador for VAIO X. "We are planning to invest over 15 crore in various media campaigns as a part of our new communication strategy," says Thapar. According to him, the new notebook is mainly targeted towards the metro cities in India.
