Bangalore: The GSM division of Tata Teleservices, Tata Docomo has launched a new route finder which works on SMS location based technology. The service works in 3G circles and also WAP (Wireless Application Protocol).
To avail the service, the subscribers have to just send a SMS to short code 533331 with the required destination address. The service will then provide a mapped image of the required destination for the user. Users who are on the Non-WAP network will get the directions in the form of SMS whereas WAP enabled devices will receive a WAP link, which will be having the text based directions and route plotted on a map.
Note that the subscriber cannot get more than 7 SMS regarding the directions and more than 7 will land in failure response. The charges for the service is
5 per request and the subscriber is not charged for invalid response. Although it is not yet clear if the subscriber is charged for the data as well.
Aircel is the other service provider who has introduced the location based services. It had tied up with MapMyIndia to launch PocketFinder, a location based service. Another location based service RouteGuru, used to provide text based directions using landmarks.
