Smartphones to acquire 25 percent market by 2013
Bangalore: The year 2013 will see the mobile phones' market selling about 25 percent smartphones. This was revealed in a research by New York-based marketing research firm ABI research, as part of its mid-year report on the smartphone market. The current projections say that 19 percent of mobile phones that are sold in 2010 will be smartphones. The previous year had seen about 16 percent mobiles sold in the smartphone category. ABI's report says that Symbian OS has remained the most popular smartphone operating system in the world so far this year followed by Google's open-source Android operating system and BlackBerry OS. Nokia leads the way in terms of sales of device manufacturers. It has sold about 45 million smartphones this year. Research in Motion follows Nokia at a distant second by selling around 22 million smartphones while Apple finds itself in third place selling around 17 million units this year. The report added that HTC and Motorola have made significant strides this year due to their success in marketing smartphones based on Google's popular Android platform.
