Bangalore: With India wiping off its reputation as an outsourced hub, the semiconductor industry is flourishing and is expected to emerge as an export hub for the sector by 2015. The phenomenon will be triggered by the growing talent pool in the field as well as the government policies which gives an edge to the hardware production.
As an export hub, the industry is expected to generate 1.85 million jobs by 2010 and 3.58 million jobs by 2015 and the average space required per employee in a fab manufacturing facility is in the range of 150-180 sq ft. So, the demand for the real estate space for the semiconductor industry is predicted to cross over 600 million sq ft by 2015 by Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj (JLLM), as reported in Financial Express.
As per JLLM, the basic element which will steer the growth will be the incentive package scheme of the center, whereby, the center will provide an incentive of 20 percent on capex, with a minimum investment of $625 million for semiconductor manufacturing plants, during the first 10 years for units in SEZ and 25 percent for those in the non-SEZ areas.
Considering the developments in the sector since the government proposal, the proposed investments have already touched
65, 000 crores, with Reliance Industries proposing an investment of
42, 000 crores followed by Videocon, Moser Baer and Signet Solar. Moreover, a huge semiconductor city is being developed at Ranga Reddy district in Andhra Pradesh with participation from private companies like AMD, SemIndia, Base Oxygen Corporation, Flextronics and HSMC.
