Walldorf: SAP announces major update of 2.6 release of their SaaS's (Software-as-a-Service) suite Business ByDesign that contains SDK (Software Development Kit) where partners can customize the software and on which SAP will develop new on-demand offerings for various lines of business. "The most important thing right now for any software company is making sure they have a strong developer ecosystem, However, the tools (SDK) have to be good and has got to grab people." said Ray Wang, CEO of Constellation Research. The new release also includes the following enhancements such as integration for subsidiaries like extended mobile support, including the iPad and RIM BlackBerry smartphones as well as in-memory expansion. Business ByDesign basically targets midsize companies having around 50-500 employees. SAP wants channel partners to increase the percentage of sales reach their customers. 40 ISV's (Independent Software Vendors) are developing add-on application for the service and around 50 solution provider resellers are carrying Business ByDesign. SAP announced ByDesign in 2007 as well but withdrew the software market and tried upgrading it ensuring it would be more profitable for the customers. The original design had almost 10,000 customers and generated the revenue of about $6 billion. The upgraded version currently has 250 customers and SAP projects to reach 1,000 customers by the end of this year which is comparatively lower than the original. SAP requires gearing up strong partner programs who may help them uncover what customer wants from the product and thereby drive in the demand for their software, says independent analyst John Reed. "If we can get this out and allow partners to grow profitably, we are potentially sitting on something really, really fantastic," said Chris Horak, global head of ByDesign marketing. Business ByDesign is available for users in some countries. Pricing for ByDesign starts at $149 per user per month.
