Safety of Northeast People, Still a Cause of Concern?

In various cities across India, people refuse to give northeast people apartments on rent. This is mainly because of the misconceptions that the northeast people are into drug and alcohol abuse. They are considered as outsiders even in their own country. In Delhi, the All India Tribal Students Association had been trying hard to reduce crime against northeast people from the last 10 years without much support and response from the government.

“We are assuring students and others from northeastern states residing in the city and other parts of Karnataka that they are safe. They need not rush back to their homes fearing attacks as rumored by unscrupulous elements”, said the city’s Deputy Commissioner of Police Vincent S D’Souza, reports IANS.

People from northeast, a rather neglected part of India, have always come together as one, fighting against all injustice meted out against them. Though the government had assured their safety, cases of discriminations are still coming up which have been a grave cause of concern regarding their safety.
