New Delhi: Call centers will soon hit Right to Information (RTI) as the later plans for facilitating the ailing masses with 'over the phone' queries. The Department of Information Technology (DIT) under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India has come up with the idea, after the exemplary setting of a RTI call center at Bihar in 2007, which is operating in four languages comprising English, Hindi, Maithili and Bhojpuri.
Ignorance has dominated the peak position amongst the obstacles for RTI. Thus, the idea of call centers shall make information availability more convenient as it saves the ignorant masses, the labor of penning their application. In fact, any information will be seeked on phone, hence, structuring a new life in the cells of RTI.
It shall also save the citizens of the trouble of buying postal orders or demand drafts for paying the nominal fee of
10 as stated in Times of India. The phone number provided will be local for every state which shall require proper co-operation of the telecom networking firms and hence the meeting will see the MTNL and BSNL being a part of the discussion.
The proposal shall soon be reviewed by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), which is the nodal agency for RTI on the Friday meeting. A nod to the 'phone pe RTI', will lead to a complete solution in accordance with RTI provisions. The call center will convert the citizen's taped request, into a written application and forward the same to the public authority concerned. The RTI application will be filed to any public authority, the first statutory appeal before the same public authority and then the second appeal before Central Information Commission (CIC), the independent appellate body. The application fee due under the RTI Act is collected through the telephone bill.
