Pace Embedded Systems Lab to boost industrial study for students

Bangalore: Pace India has set up its first Embedded Systems Lab in the RV College of Engineering in Bangalore, which can help the students to be ready for the industry when they graduate. The lab will be used by the undergraduate and post graduate students from different engineering verticals like Telecommunications, Electronics, Computer Science and Information Sciences for studying projects in the digital video and set top box technology. "The lab is meant for students to work on the projects that are sub-system of the set top box technology used in the MPEG 4 system for digitizing video and broadcast. The High Definition Television (HDTV) is the future, and these students will get to work along with the Pace engineers on industrial level projects," said Professor K. N. Raja Rao, Principal, RV College of Engineering, Bangalore. The process of installing the lab is done in the time period of one month. The college is an autonomous body and falls within the top 10 engineering colleges in the country. "We have our own curriculum and with this addition, the students will be able to study the mixture of hardware, firmware and software of set top box along with its design and implementation," said Professor Rao. Pace plc is a manufacturer of digital satellite, cable, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) products and services works with Comcast, Time Warner Cable, UPC, Premiere, SKY Italia, Viasat, FOXTEL and Sky New Zealand across different geographies. The company ships around 17 million units of set top boxes every year. David McKinney, Chief Operating Officer, Pace said, "The Embedded Systems Lab is our corporate social responsibility. The lab will help students to gain industry level knowledge and expertise with during their studies." Pace had commenced its Indian operations around two years before, and has added around 70 employees in last six to nine months, summing the work force strength in India to about 250. The global workforce of the company exceeds 1200 employees. Its Indian operations are responsible for the end to end development and designing of the products, as the Bangalore based engineering center is presently engaged in seven out of 14 products that are in development process. Currently, the company is in talks with the satellite television operators to enter the Indian market. Srinath Siddalgatta, Director, Pace India said, "We are also in the process of product development with one of the leading operator, and the project is expected to be launched by the end of the year."
