Organ Transplant Still a Myth in India?

Mostly, 95 percent kidneys and livers are from living donors. On the other hand the condition in western countries is quite different as above 70 percent transplanted organs are from brain dead people. As such in India every one person dies of kidney failure in 4-5 minutes every day.

Rajasthan is one such Indian state which is lagging behind in organ donation as compared to the other states where life-saving organ transplant is concerned. This state has no such policy for dead body donation.

A senior doctor of the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) hospital said, “A large number of patients require organs, which could save their lives, but there is very less awareness among people about organ donation. They do not know that their donated organs could save the life of many people. There are many brain dead people, who could donate their organs,” reported TOI.

At present, the Central Government is working on a new draft of the Human Organ Rules 2012 in which the health ministry has suggested that all people who are applying for driving licence will be asked if they are willing to donate their organs after death.

Though, doctors and NGO’s have started taking up steps to reach out to the people and make them aware of organ donation and its advantages, the countrymen too should encourage their kin to donate their organs against their own set of norms, because on the part of the donor, they lose nothing while the donee gains everything.
