Only Computer Grads can build India's Google: Rediff CEO
Bangalore: Ajit Balakrishnan, Chairman and CEO of Rediff.com has appealed to the computer graduates of the country to set themselves as an Internet Entrepreneur. Ajit Balakrishnan is of the opinion that the next big internet company would be created by a young 22 year old who would do something radical and revolutionize the internet space. He said "This is because 22 year olds don't see constraints that we older folks see. The internet industry needs 22 year old Computer Science graduates who can create products that have inherent network effects. Products like twitter and facebook are there because of the network effects." "We need to resolve three paradoxes before we can create ten Indian internet companies as a one billion Dollar company," says Balakrishnan at the 4th India Digital Summit organized by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), according to YourStory.in. Balakrishnan mentioned that the three paradoxes are: While globally successful internet companies are set up by computer science graduates, in India most of the internet companies are started by management graduates. While entrepreneur complain that less VCs are available for them, VCs say that no entrepreneurs are available to them. Internet Industry's revenue realization is less than 10 percent of countries which have similar internet user base. He also added "The industry needs to support and encourage such young entrepreneurs by providing them funding and hand holding to build such products." When asked about content he said that content has become a commodity and in my view machine learning which if applied to products to deliver network effects is what will create the next internet company with a $100 million revenue.
