Mumbai: Now the 'iPhone bug' has bitten Indian software developers. With the new iPhone's global launch, Indian software development firms are eyeing an opportunity in developing new iPhone applications in their own backyards. With Apple's new opening of its online App Store for iPhone software, Steven P Jobs attempts to offer more than 500 software applications, including games, educational programs, mobile commerce and business productivity tool is giving hopes for these developers. As reported in New York Times, Jobs contends that Apple does not plan to make much money on games and other applications; he has also said the company does not make much money selling music on iTunes. Witnessing the enthusiasm among software developers is high, from San Jose and other parts of the world, Apple gives developers a 70 percent cut of sales. Identifying the opportunity, some of the Indian companies like Robosoft Technologies, Jumbsoft, and Games2win has tied up with Airtel and Vodafone in India that will provide these firms access to a combined subscriber base of over 110 million. Rohith Bhat, CEO, Robosoft Technologies told Business Standard that a team of 35 engineers are working to develop iPhone games and India-specific entertainment application that will be released through App Store to both Indian and international iPhone users. Moreover, while announcing the 3G auctioning globally, TRAI had argued that more than 300 applications are already waiting for DoT clearance to start 3G services. Apple, globally, has registered over 250,000 downloads of the iPhone 3G software development kit globally. Leading developers such as AOL, Cisco, eBay, Electronic Arts and Sega have demonstrated native applications developed using the iPhone SDK. With analysts predicting more than 25 million iPhones in the market before 2008-end, developers expect big returns.
