Next gen LTE-TDD network trials conducted by RIL, Qualcomm

New Delhi: The next generation of broadband is here and the trials for the same have already begun in India. The technology behind the new phase in broadband network services is called LTE-TDD (long-term evolution and time division duplex).The trial showcased LTE-TDD networks exceptional performance by achieving the healthy balanced peak rates of 80 Mbps in the downlink and 20 Mbps in the uplink.for the specified configuration/setup.Reliance Industries (RIL) and Qualcomm conducted separate trials of LTE-TDD in Mumbai and Gurgaon respectively.
Both Reliance and Qualcomm have partnered with Swedish equipment maker Ericsson to conduct the trials of the new technology in India. In the Gurgaon experiment done by Qualcomm in association with Ericsson, HD video was streamed to a mobile van. The data was transferred using Radio Access Network (RAN) and Evolved Packet Core (EPC) solutions from Ericsson, and USB dongles based on Qualcomm's multimode chipset that supports both LTE and 3G.
Kanwalinder Singh, President, Qualcomm India and South Asia, said, "LTE-TDD, with its attributes of mobility and 3G interoperability, is the technology most suited for deployment in India. The demonstration today is a significant step towards commercial availability of infrastructure and chipsets that will support both 3G and LTE-TDD in 2011."
Qualcomm has air waves in four circles in India, including Delhi and Mumbai. RIL, on the other hand, has acquired pan-India spectrum for broadband services in the 2.3 Ghz frequency band.
A RIL spokesperson said, "This LTE trial not only demonstrated the superiority of LTE-TDD technology but also strengthened our confidence in the timely availability of LTE eco-system in India with Ericsson's global deployment expertise."
Nokia Siemens had last month demonstrated the TDD version of LTE that used 4G mobile technology running on commercial hardware in the 2.3-GHz frequency band across 20 MHz of bandwidth.
