Network Forensics: The next wave in cyber security
Bangalore: Computers and the networks that connect the innumerous computers around the world have gone on from being wondrous innovations to pervasive business necessities in today's world. With increasing business deals being carried over the virtual world, systems are getting more complex and heterogeneous and thus more prone to cyber crime or data breaches. Even when one follows the latest security trends and goes for the best practices to protect the systems and networks, there are still many loopholes left in the network itself that gives into the cyber criminals. While IDS, IPS, Firewalls and Log Analysis are some of the state of the art cyber defenses available, network forensics is an evolving field in the security landscape. And any developing field generates curiosity among people and creates a thirst in them to know more about the unknown. Ajit Pillai, Regional Director- India and Middle East, Niksun satiated this thirst of people in the SiliconIndia Security Conference in Bangalore on October 2, 2010 by elaborating on the topic of network forensics. Terming network forensics as the eminent technology in the security atmosphere today, Pillai said that this is going to be the next wave in security. In this approach, Pillai said, "Data is recorded, stored and reconstructed in order to discover the source of security attacks or other problem incidents." This leads us to the unknowns in the security breach and hence to the truth. "And the truth is on the wire," said Pillai. To reach to the truth, the various tools used are archiving the network traffic, sessionizing, and parsing and data extraction. Pillai also added that network forensics would add to and co-exist with the security solutions available, making them more comprehensive and useful. Harsha Thennarasu E, IT Head, ISKCON, an audience member at the Conference shared that, "monitoring networks is a major headache to the IT heads across organizations and network forensics will surely take care of that." So gauging the reaction from people and Pillai himself, it will be safe to say that network forensics is here to stay and will vastly influence the security arena in the future bringing in more solutions to the sector.
