Bangalore: Social networking website MySpace has started its own email service, MySpace Mail, for its 130 million users. The MySpace Mail, which was earlier rolled out in a test version will be available to the users in coming few weeks, the statement from the company informed.
With this induction, MySpace has entered into the mail category with potential to be the second largest mail provider in the U.S. and the fourth largest in the world, said the statement.
The company said that MySpace Mail would allow users of the social network to "communicate and share content with people both inside and outside the MySpace network."
This move of MySpace is being looked as a challenge to the more established email services such as Google's Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Microsoft's Hotmail.
The MySpace users can create a mail account on MySpace by using their current user name on the social network, adding a @myspace.com address. The mail service allows the users to embed photos directly from their profile into email, to send music and video as attachments.
MySpace had reduced its domestic staff by nearly 30 percent, and is also cutting back the international staff.
The social networking site has been facing stiff competition from Facebook, as it had displaced MySpace from its premier position last year as the world's most popular social network, and has been widening its lead since then.
