Akio Morita
Akio Morita was a Japanese businessman who co-founded Sony Corporation along with Masaru Ibuka. His company, Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation) that later was renamed as Sony, was the first to sell tape recorder in Japan. It was initially producing a prototype for a rice cooker.
Morita believed in the best product in the world, the most efficient production in the world and global marketing. He was a graduate from Osaka Imperial University. Under his leadership, the company produced the first transistor television in the world. Sony Corporation of America became the first Japanese company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1989, Sony bought Columbia Pictures and entered Hollywood, music production and global media. It was his innovation and globalization agenda that made Japan one of the leading industrial countries.
