London: In order to focus on the development of photovoltaic technology, memory chip firm Micron Technology has formed a 50:50 joint venture (JV) with Sydney based integrated energy firm Origin Energy. More details, such as where the JV would be based, what will be each other's contribution and the name of the new company, were not revealed, according to EE Times. In May 2009, it was reported that Micron was seeking up to $5 million in stimulus funds from the Idaho Office of Energy Resources to help it diversify into the use of its silicon manufacturing capacity for solar power. "The near-term objective of the joint venture is to combine the work Origin has done to date in solar development with Micron's capabilities, and to examine opportunities for commercialization," said Andrew Stock, Executive General Manager of Major Development Projects at Micron. Origin Energy is focused on gas and oil exploration and production, power generation and energy retailing. The company is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange and is in the ASX top 20 and has approximately 4,000 employees. The company services more than 3.5 million electricity, natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas customers across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. "As we have looked to leverage our core strengths in other markets, photovoltaic energy technology is a natural area of investigation," said Mark Durcan, Micron's President and Chief Operating Officer.
