Men Who Received Capital Punishment in India

1. Afzal Guru:

Afzal Guru, an Indian terrorist who was involved in a precisely planned attack on the Indian Parliament by the Jaish-e-Mohammed and the Lashkar-e-Tayiba on 13th December, 2001. He was convicted by Indian court for the attack and sentenced to death by a special Prevention of Terrorism Act Court in 2002. This attack on the upper house by the jihadis was termed as a 'war on the Indian State' by the Indian Government as they had targeted the greatest symbol of the country's democratic life.

Later, Guru had also identified the bodies of other five terrorists, Mohammed, Haider, Hamza, Rana and Raja, killed during the shootout by the security personnel within the Parliament compound. According to a bench including Justices P V Reddi and P P Naolekar had said in the judgement, "The circumstances detailed above clearly establish that appellant Afzal Guru was associated with the deceased terrorists in almost every act done by them in order to achieve the objective of attacking the Parliament House.” Although, there were various clemency pleas in favor of Guru, he was ultimately hanged on 9th February, 2013; and his body was buried in Tihar jail in a confidential operation.
