3. G M Rao, GMR Group

The Chairman of GMR Group, Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao aka G M Rao, made a generous contribution by donating 740 crore towards the education of underprivileged children. The endowment made by Rao is equivalent to his personal share of his business. GMR Varalakshmi Foundation serves the underserved sections of society in 22 locations. For charitable purpose, Rao donated 1540 crores in 2012. In an interview, Rao mentioned that Warren Buffett is his ultimate inspiration to support of ‘Giving back to the society.’ According to Forbes, Rao's net worth is estimated around $2.6 billion. He feels that his action goes with the philosophy of nation building before any other consideration.

2. Shiv Nadar, HCL

The Founder and chairman of HCL group, Shiv Nadar, is the second highest contributor in the list with a generous donation of 3,000 crore. The Shiv Nadar Foundation mainly focused towards educational initiatives and expansion programmes, which benefits around 15,000 students across India. It's not only about him, but his wife too shares an equal space when it comes to charity. Shiv Nadar's wife Rohini, has donated millions over the years to support causes such as education, microfinance, health care and environment.
