Marissa Bans Yahoo's Work From Home; Mixed Reactions

Bangalore: Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer’s new company policy which told all the remote employees that they may no longer work from home and need to find a way to work in office from June, has been inviting a lot of criticism especially from the Yahoo employees, including some working mothers, says various reports.

Richard Bradson, Virgin Group founder has sharply criticized Mayer in his blog by posting that, “It was perplexing to see Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer tell employees who work remotely to relocate to company facilities.”

Apart from the criticisms, there were views in support of Mayer’s decision. "For what it's worth, I support the no working from home rule. There's a ton of abuse of that at Yahoo. Something specific to the company.” says, a former Yahoo engineer in support of Mayer’s decision. He also added saying the company’s workforce led to “people slacking off like crazy, not being available, spending a lot of time on non-Yahoo! projects."

Adding in, Micheal Katz, ex-Yahoo, former ad tech executive, told that banning working from home was right from what Mayer has done. "Working from home may be convenient for some but it represents a huge opportunity cost to the team, especially a team that's trying to turn things around."

Yahoo! is trying to improve the working environment. Mayer had decided on the ban due to various reasons. As per the sources, the company has majority of the employees working remotely, and they weren’t productive. Another side-benefit to this move is that certain remote workers will quit which helps Yahoo! to cut costs.
