Maharashtra tops in e-filing of returns

New Delhi: The process of income tax department has become more technology dependent. With the growing number of taxpayers opting for e-payment for filing tax returns, there is a growth of seven times than that of last year's.With, 278,112 e-returns, Maharashtra is at the top of the list followed by Delhi with 153,992 and Karnataka with 144,287. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat registered 118,354 and 115,798 e-returns respectively till July 31 this year, says report.
This year, 8.85 percent of the total taxpayers have opted for electronic payment of tax filing, whereas it was 1.16 percent last year. There is also an increase in e-returns as 12.49 taxpayers chose to pay their tax through internet.
The statistics involve both voluntary returns (individuals and non-corporate) and mandatory returns (corporates & large firms). This process ensures the security of data as it is processed through a fully encrypted website. It also has a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) authentication.The servers have a bandwidth of 53 mbps and receive 31,740 returns per hour at peak rate.
According to reports, the e-payment scheme is mandatory for all corporate assessees, and to those non-corporate assesses to whom provisions of section 44AB of the Income Tax Act apply.There is a lot of information included in the form called 'ITR-V' form which is filed for e-return. It bears acknowledgement and verification details along with the PAN number of the taxpayer, according to an income tax official. The payment in e-return facility can be made through credit or debit cards.
