NEW DELHI:India has asked the European Union to make it easier for Indians to work in Europe in order to boost trade between India and the EU. “There are unexplored possibilities for diversification in our trade which are not being exploited adequately,” Commerce Minister Kamal Nath said in a speech at the 6th India-EU Business Summit in New Delhi today. “It is time that we seriously examined the reasons for this less than satisfactory state of affairs. We need to find innovative solutions to overcome this hiatus in our economic relations.” India has urged the 15 nation EU to make it easier for Indian software engineers, accountants and other service industry employees to work on contracts and remove restrictions. It has also called for a temporary visa system allowing developing nations to send “highly skilled” workers abroad for limited periods. “If Europe is to remain on a growth path, then the EU will have to look at outsourcing as a business cooperation model,” Nath said. “The fundamental requirement for such a model is a liberal and easy regime allowing for the free movement” of workers.
