Lawmakers Turn Lawbreaker: World's Worst Parliamentary Clashes
Ukraine, 2014:
In a country like Ukraine where there is a history of parliamentary battles that often turn physical, the recent spat during the budget does not seem new anymore. As members of Ukraine's parliament brawled over the 2014 budget, the budgetary constraints rapidly turned into fisticuffs. During the brawls, the members of opposition parties tried to disrupt the parliamentary session by throwing some punches. The politicians were attacking each other in the parliamentary chamber. After the melee, one of the members, Vladimir Malyshev, was left with a bloody face.
India, 2014:
Recently, India’s parliament has exploded in chaos over a bill to create a new Telangana state. The angry MPs blow off by pulling out a microphone and pepper-spraying the chamber. Not just this, they went extreme by holding banners and shouting slogans, and disrupted the lower house of parliament as the Congress-led government introduced the contentious bill to carve a new state out of the existing Andhra Pradesh. It is reported that several lawmakers climbed into ambulances suffering breathing problems before reportedly being taken to hospital. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath slammed the unrest as a “big blot on our parliamentary democracy’’ and said, “It is the most shameful day in our parliamentary history,” reports AFP.
