Karnataka Witnesses Maximum Number of School Dropouts from Muslim Community

The study also suggests that about one-third of Muslim children study in Karnataka’s Urdu-medium schools.

One among the main reasons why Muslim students quit schooling is that there are only 520 Urdu-medium high schools from the 2,411 primary schools that have Urdu as a medium of instruction.

Karnataka’s Gulbarga and Belgaum districts have the maximum number of students who study in Urdu-medium schools.

But the good news is that the state had a healthy 15 percent enrolment rate between 2008-09 and 2011-12, where nearly 15.1 lakh Muslim students enrolled in educational centers.

Sheriff further adds on and says, "This reveals an educational awakening among Muslims and success of the Prime Minister's pre-matric scholarship scheme for meritorious students from minority communities. Though the scheme started with only 21,018 scholarships across Karnataka in 2008-09, the number increased to 4.27 lakh in 2011-12."
