Jail Inmates to Help Government Regulate Food Price

It was Cheran, Tamil film director who first launched the chapatti project in December 2011. Till The project is successfully rolling out about 40,000 chapattis, 500 packets of vegetable curry and 3,500 packets of chicken curry by Poojappura jail under the brand name Poojappura Chapattis. Other jails in Kerala too followed this noble task and began to make chapattis under a brand name Freedom Chapattis.

Since transporting chapattis from Thiruvananthapuram to Sabarimala may not turn out as a profitable idea, jail authorities are now shifting many prisoners, including those serving life term, from Thiruvananthapuram jail to Pathanamthitta for assisting the food production. Not only this, the vegetable used in making curries also grown within the jail compounds itself.

Though, the main motive behind hiring prisoners was only to make chapattis to sell at cheaper rates, the task is also engaging these convicted prisoners to utilize themselves for something good and indirectly, it is indeed a great method of curbing price rise in a country like India.
