Mumbai: India will get the 3G iPhone, an internet enabled multimedia mobile phone along with other countries soon, but will have to spend more than what the other countries do, to access the system. It would be
20,000 in India, which is the highest price in the world.
Since the Indian service providers unlikely to subsidize the gadget as AT&T in the U.S. and O2 in U.K do. The price is expected to almost double the rate in the global market, Reported Business Standard.
In U.K., the iPhone 3G is subsidized by O2, and in Germany and U.S., T-Mobile and AT&T giving subsidies respectively in order to reduce the price of the phone. At the same time Indian companies are failing to get subsidies.
The prices of the latest versions of the 3G mobiles in global market as well as the Indian market seem to have big variations. The industry sources say that the prices of the iPhone (version2.0) would be double the amount of that in the U.S, the 16 GB version would cost around
24,000 to 28,000 in India. Moreover the companies are also expected to levy handling and other charges which is believed as one of the reason for increasing prices for the 3G iPhone prices in India. While companies like AT&T and O2 are bundling the iPhones with their services, helping in cheaper pricing of handset to consumers, Indian companies like Airtel and Vodafone are unlikely to subsidize them as bundling is not a successful formula in the country.
A Bharathi Airtel spokesman said they have plans of bringing in iPhone before the close of the year, the date of launching is yet to be announced.
