Intel revealed new features of Sandy Bridge chip

San Francisco: Intel has made known several technical specifics of its upcoming Sandy Bridge chip architecture during the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. Sandy Bridge" microprocessor contains a new feature which might be called a "super turbo boost" that will accelerate performance beyond the red line. The most interesting feature of the chip is the improved turbo feature, which is called Turbo 2.0.
Intel had showcased the Sandy Bridge chip and has revealed some of its key attributes. Although the company has not officially announced the core metrics of the architecture, it is presumed to have four cores and process up to eight threads simultaneously. At the same time, a company executive revealed that a two-core/four-thread chip is also possible.
Opher Kahn, a Senior Principal Engineer for Intel, said that Turbo 2.0 works by operating a core well beyond what the Core i5, or "Lynnfield," could offer. But in doing so, it can push the core beyond the thermal design power (TDP) threshold, which has traditionally been known as the maximum power beyond which a chip cannot operate safely. "We've combined optimizations to get Turbo Boost to new bins of frequency," he said. He also mentioned that the Sandy Bridge will be overclockable to several higher notches of clock frequency than Lynnfield.
Company also gave a short description of the new ring architecture Sandy Bridge uses, which shares a cache between the CPU and graphics cores. "Games designed for the highest-end, extreme end probably will not run unless you de-feature or run on a smaller screen, but for the more mainstream games, I expect the answer would be yes," said Tom Piazza, an Intel fellow.
