Intel lines up Kilmer Peak, a new chipset for WiMax

New Delhi: Chip-maker Intel, which is banking on WiMax to push sales for its chipsets to be used in mobile computing devices is now lining up WiMax chipsets to operate on 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz. The new chipset will be named as 'Kilmer Peak' and is slated for availability as early as Q1 2010.
The move by Intel follows relevant authorities in different countries allotting WiMax spectrum in the 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz or 3.5 GHz spectrum band. Presently Intel WiMax chips are designed to operate in the 2.5 GHz band. Even in India, the government has for the moment restricted auctioning of WiMax spectrum to the 2.3 GHz band only. Spectrum in 2.5 GHz band will be available only after issues with the Space Organization are resolved.
With the new chip, which will support all the three popular bands for WiMax, Intel is aiming to increase its addressable market as well as gear up for demand from markets such as India. The chip-maker has been preparing to participate in bids, after being invited by state-run telecom equipment manufacturer Indian Telecom Industries (ITI) to set up joint ventures based on various technologies including Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax).
