Infosys yet to set its footprint on rural BPO segment
Bangalore: Indian IT bellwether Infosys is yet to set its footprint in the rural BPO segment. "We are in talks for opening a BPO in the rural areas, which will basically cater to the requirements of the Indian clients. The location for the new center is yet to be decided," said D Swami Swaminathan, Senior Vice President, Infosys BPO on the sidelines of the Nasscom BPO Strategy Summit. The company has tie-ups with some of the rural BPOs. However, it has not set up its own process in the rural areas. The lack of apt skill has been the main dent, for the company to approach the rural areas. The rigid process of selecting a center that emphasizes on proper knowledge pool availability and scalability of the assets and resources of the center also proves to be an impediment to establish a center in the rural areas. "The requirement of foreign clients cannot be handled by the rural BPOs. It has to be handled by the centers in the Tier 1 cities," Swaminathan said. Currently, India contributes only about 1.3 percent of the firm's revenue. The company's role in expanding its centers globally too remains constrained due to its rigid process. It has seven centers spread throughout the globe that includes centers in the U.S., Poland and Manila. "The only problem with Indian service sector is the lack of skilled people. It is the universities, who need to upgrade the educational system and make the youth more skilled. Sometimes, at Infosys, I feel like running a training center than a BPO," said Swaminathan.
