Indian railway acquires Nortel's wireless technology

Kolkata: Nortel, a provider of communication technology is looking to deliver its wireless technology services to various sectors such as railways, aviation and shipping. As a beginning Nortel has initiated talks with Indian railways concerning the installation of wireless technology, reported The Economic Times. Dhananjay Ganjoo, Vice-president, Enterprise solutions, Nortel said, "Wireless technology is set to become the next big thing in India. We are talking to Indian Railways as well as aviation and shipping companies to create awareness about this technology. We are hopeful of clinching deals in the third and fourth quarters of calendar 2008." Previously, Nortel had provided wireless services to Indian railways along the 751-km, 90-station line in Uttar Pradesh with the help of GSM- technology. Apart from that Nortel has also provided networking services to International airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. Currently, the Indian railways is planning to modernize its 62,800 km track connecting over 7000 stations across India. Through the deal with Indian railways, Nortel is looking to garner a major share of the railway budget.
