Indian entrepreneurs should leverage domestic market: Deshpande
Bangalore: Gururaj Deshpande, during the 10th anniversary of Tejas Networks said, "Indian entrepreneurs should leverage domestic market." In the past many entrepreneurs in India failed as they were trying to build a product for the U.S. market without knowing the customer mindsets. Entrepreneurs have a lot of opportunity to build world class product companies. As Indian market is the most demanding, focusing on domestic market and leveraging it will give them a kick start initially to go global. He has advised on focusing on a local market from where they can think about a world class product that is not so far away. China is already doing it. "Finding ways to leverage in the market is very important for any business but in a different way and the Chinese style is not the right way for us to follow," he added. But India can take the example of Korea when it comes to the growth of bandwidth. Korea became the bandwidth capital of the world with a per capita broadband penetration. More than half of its households have high-bandwidth connections, compared to less than 10 percent in the U.S. People of Indian origin have contributed immensely in building many successful global high-tech product companies and undoubtedly have contributed extensively to the technological and entrepreneurial areas. But in the midst of all the possibilities like huge domestic market, high talented technical pool, managerial workforce and the venture capitalists to provide the necessary funding for capable product startups, still we don't have innovation-driven, globally successful, high-tech product companies from the country. Drawing examples from Tejas, one of India's biggest technology product companies, with a revenue of 620 crore in the year ended March 2010 he said, "Many Indian and overseas telecom carriers are users of Tejas' networking products and a similar process of doing innovations relevant to the Indian market will help the entrepreneurs to be successful in the global market." Companies based in India can serve the highly competitive domestic market and at the same time produce high quality competitive products to the rest of the world besides R&D. The areas like energy, medical, biotech and nanotechnology are some of the areas the country should focus.
