India Joins U.S.-Led Initiative To Boost Health Security

New Delhi: Despite the recent dissonance over quality of drugs and trade practices, India has joined a U.S.-led initiative to build a global system to prevent, detect and respond to outbreaks of infectious. diseases which could be launching specific projects to secure a healthier world.

Besides India and the U.S., 25 other countries from the developed and developing world, including China, and the World Health Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the World Organization for Animal Health joined what is called the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) and discussed plans to prevent diseases that are naturally occurring, intentionally produced through releases of dangerous pathogens, or the result of a laboratory accident.

Over the past decade, health has become a growing international concern that has engaged considerable attention of the foreign and security policy makers as certain health-related issues adversely affect or create risks for national and international security or economic growth.

"In our interconnected world, we are all vulnerable," says Laura Holgate of the U.S. National Security Council.
