India, Britain mull joint therapeutic cloning research

CHENNAI: Indian and British scientists could soon begin joint research on therapeutic cloning.
India's Department of Science and Technology has expressed an interest in this, a top British scientist said here Friday.
"India and Britain are already collaborating in stem cell research that has yielded very positive results in the study of tuberculosis and in its cure," said David King, chief scientific adviser to the British government and head of the Office of Science and Technology.
Now this programme will be taken forward, he felt.
King met officials at the Indian Institute of Technology's Department of Electrical Engineering here. The department will be among the beneficiaries of Britain's science and technology tie-up with India.
Britain has been able to persuade India to join a programme in which scientists from various countries pool their equipment and technology through a shared network. Called the GRID access, it is already operational between Britain and other countries in the field of astronomy.
"India is particularly interested in developing middleware (something between software and hardware in computer technology), especially in the programme installation project," King added.
