Bangalore: India is ranked 44th in the global IT competitiveness index this year, while the U.S. continues to lead the annual survey done by the Economist Intelligence Unit. India has moved four places from its 2008 ranking of 48.
The key attributes of a country in analyzing its environment for the IT sector are, ample supply of skills, innovation friendly culture, world class technology and infrastructure, protection and enforcement of IPRS, open competitive economy and government support.
The report suggests that the recession oriented, 'buy local' policies of the U.S. could endanger its placement in the future. Sponsored by the Business Software Alliance (members include Microsoft, Apple and Intel), the study compared the technology policies of 66 countries.
The study is in its third year, but this is the first time that analysts have examined how policy makers around the world react to a major economic downturn. The technology sector is relatively healthy compared to other sectors, but it isn't immune to reductions in investments and other cutbacks.
The competitiveness study helps the BSA communicate to government officials around the world as to how they can promote technology investments in their own countries, according to BSA President Robert Holleyman. The BSA will participate in round table discussions in several countries over the next few months to talk about the report's findings.
