New Delhi: India's two premier institutes have managed to enter the list of the top 200 universities. In the list, IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay have been ranked 154 and 174 respectively by the Times Higher Education-QS World University Ranking survey for 2008, published this week. The list was topped by Harvard University of U.S.
The two institutes see an improvement in the ranking this year. These two were the only Indian institutes on the top 400-list put out by the survey last year. While IIT-Delhi had stood at the 254th position in 2007, IIT-Bombay was at 269.
While Indian universities pathetically stood away from the international rankings largely dominated by UK and U.S. based varsities, as many as nine Asian institutes were among the top 50 institutes, including three based in Hong Kong.
China accounts for as many as five universities in the top 200, with Peking University placed at 50 and Tsinghua University at 56. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Seoul National University are the two new faces in the list.
