New Delhi: After years of delays, The Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has finally been made available all over India, after the years of delay it had to undergo.
The Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal expressed his happiness about the national launch of MNP as he opines that it's a great step forward for the consumer and it enhances his choice.
Through MNP, it has become a cakewalk to move to a better phone company while retaining the current number. According to the statistics, about 700 million Indians use cell phones. Many customers, especially pre-paid ones, had been waiting for the MNP to kickstart so as to avail better services.
The procedure to shift is extremely simple wherein an SMS needs to be sent from your phone to 1900 which would be replied to by your present company with a unique porting code. That specified code is mandatory while filling out a detailed form for the company the customer wants to shift to. Within a short time span of 48 hours that company will take over all the cell services and the fee charged is a meager amount of

The shifting procedure will not cause much of an inconvenience to the customers as the cell number will be switched off for only one hour. All bills after this procedure is over will be paid to the new company. The customer needs to plan well before shifting as once the entire procedure is done, he/she would require retaining the same number for at least 50 days before shifting again.
While you can shift from a GSM service to CDMA or vice versa, you cannot shift from one state to another. If you do, roaming kicks in, just like it does right now.
Rajan Mathews, Director General, Cellular Operators Association of India, COAI said, "You can use number portability for any post-paid as well as prepaid number. In case of a post-paid number, there shouldn't be any dues. For a prepaid number, carry forward of any balance to the new service provider is not permitted."
There is a need to change the SIM while porting the number. Apart from retaining the same number, the process is same as acquiring a new connection. Although MNP has kicked off all over India now, but in Haryana it was launched on November 25 and 80000 people have already opted for it.
