Houston's Rathna Kumar gets Sangeet Natak Akademi Award

Houston: Rathna Kumar, a noted dance teacher from Houston, is among those to receive this year's Sangeet Natak Akademi Award given by the Government of India.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi Award is given in recognition of outstanding contribution and service to Indian classical dance. Kumar will receive the award from President Pratibha Patil shortly in New Delhi.
Kumar is the founder of Anjali Center for Performing Arts, Texas' first Indian dance academy. Since its establishment in 1975, the dance academy has become an eminent institution. She has an Honorary Doctorate in Performing Arts from India and currently teaching an Indian dance course at Rice University.
Kumar has also been invited by UNESCO as a Keynote speaker for Arts Outreach and Arts Education panels in Portugal and Hongkong.
