Bangalore: India is aiming to host Asia's first commercial-scale tidal power station in the western Indian state of Gujarat. UK-based engineering firm Atlantis Resources, specialized in underwater turbines will install a 50MW tidal farm in the Gulf of Kutch, the BBC reports.
As per the report, the Indian project, starting early in 2012, will have to outrun developments at Sihwa Lake, a South Korean tidal barrage under construction on the country's west coast in order to claim the title of "Asia's first".
According to a recent study by Atlantis, Gujarat has enough potential to initiate a tidal power station. The firm said that it ran a global study of tidal power resources about two and a half years ago. They came up with some hotspots where resource seemed well matched to load. The Gulf of Kutch was one of them.
The facility could be expanded to deliver more than 200MW and is likely to cost about $150 million. The proposed project is expected to be completed by 2013.
