Govt. begins site inspection for new IIMs, IITs

New Delhi: The human resource development (HRD) ministry has begun the process of establishment of proposed six IIMs, eight IITs and 12 central universities across the country. To decide location for new institutions, the ministry has constituted various committees under the Chairmanship of Additional Secretary, Ashok Thakur for assessing the sites offered by the various state governments.
Earlier, the government has allocated
2,725 crore in the 11th plan for 12 new central universities and
2,000 crore for IITs and other
600 crore for setting up six new IIMs in Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhatisgarh, Uttarakhand and Haryana. Separate committees have been set up for IITs and IIMs which would closely check the places whether all the requirements are fulfilled.
According to a senior HRD official the site for IIM should spread over about 200 acres of land while over 500 acres of land is required for each IIT and central university. Besides, connectivity through air, rail and road is a mandatory requirement for each institute.
The committees headed by Thakur will visit the sites offered by Rajastan, Orissa, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for inspection to set up IITs, and the inspection of other places also is expected to begin soon.
