Government Anxious Over Popularity Of Chinese Apps In India

"We will come out with concrete observations soon," said Rakesh Singh, a joint secretary who oversees internal security at the home ministry.

Last month, market researcher StatCounter said UC Browser had surpassed Opera to become the most popular mobile browser in India. Tencent said it has over 100 million users outside China, most of whom are from fast-growing Smartphone markets such as India, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Singh said that the Government’s discussions are not limited to WeChat and UC Browser but broader mobile policy matters and how India would handle such issues. "It should not happen that today we take a call on WeChat and tomorrow something else starts," he said.

In the past, India urged Chinese telecom gear makers Huawei and ZTE to disclose details of their ownership over concerns about harmful software being installed on such equipment.

With 129 percent growth in Smartphone market, India is now the world's fastest-growing Smartphone market, according to research firm Canalys. J Satyanarayana, secretary at the department of electronics and IT, said the government will scrutinize the apps if concerns are raised.
