Google Doodle Celebrates 160th Anniversary Of The First Indian Passenger Train
Bangalore: Google Doodle is celebrating the 160th Anniversary of India’s passenger train today. The doodle shows a steam locomotive which replaces the ‘o’ carrying a passenger train on a palm lined railway track.
160 years ago, the first passenger train took off to Thane leaving Bori Bunder station in Bombay on April 16th 1853. The 14 carriage passenger train had invited 400 guests onboard, hauling three locomotives namely Sahib, Sindh and Sultan, taking 57 minutes to complete the 37 kilometer journey.
Though the Bombay-Thane train is regarded as the first one in India, the actual history goes back to 1836 when the first experimental rail-line sub continent came up near Chintadripet Bridge.
Since history, India’s railway network has grown immensely and is considered to be one of the world’s largest railway networks comprising of nearly 115,000 kms of tracks over a route of 65,000 kms and 7500 stations.
