Google Blames Survey Of India For Probe Over 'Mapathon'
He also added in saying, "We have not heard back from them... we are always available to discuss any concerns that they or other agencies might have regarding our programmes."
It was unclear on what arguments the agency asked Google to stop the contest. When questioned, an official said that certain information uploaded on Google Maps could possibly have been sensitive. Such kind of information would have required clearance from Ministry of Defense. Unfortunately, the official didn’t specify if the information uploaded was during the contest or not. He said, "This is up to the police to find out."
The national map policy states that the Survey of India is the only mandated authority to undertake surveying of installations that are part of “restricted” section. The Mapathon contest was encouraging Indians to use Map Maker to put local regions on the map and correct the errors.
