How do the two riots compare? Both 1984 and 2002 are a blot on our country, and needs to be condemned. While the 2002 riots were carried out due to the inaction and support of the BJP state government, the 1984 genocide occurred under the close watch of the Congress Government at the Centre. The Sikh riots were an organized attack on the minority community, in reaction to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh body guards. They were organized killings by members and leaders of a single political party, the Congress. The severity of the attack may be understood from the fact that the riots happened in just 3 days, in which 2700 Sikhs were killed and 50,000 displaced. Leaders of the Congress like Rajiv Gandhi, P V Narasimha Rao, Kamal Nath, Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler were very much active in the 1984 riots. 2002 riots on the other hand were a spontaneous reaction to the Godhra Carnage in which around 59 Hindu pilgrims were burnt alive in a train by Muslims. The event triggered widespread violence in Gujarat, resulting in the deaths of about 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus. The state government under Narendra Modi collaborated with the rioters in killing Muslims. The riots continued for weeks.
