Tragedies do not seems to leave Bhopal as it was reported that nearly 279 people were illegally tested for new drugs without their knowledge or consent at the Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) - one of the several violations that took place while conducting 10 clinical trials at the hospital, reports NDTV. Out of 279 people, 215 were gas survivors like Ramadhar with chronic conditions, making them ineligible.
"They didn't tell me anything about the medicine. When they used to give me the medicine bottle, they used to make me sign a form which I had no clue about," said Ramadhar, a gas tragedy survivor.
In a settlement between the government and the Union Carbide, the company agreed to pay $470 million in a full and final settlement of its civil and criminal liability. The Supreme Court had directed the company to finance a 500-bed hospital for the medical care of the survivors. Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) was inaugurated in 1998. It was obliged to give free care for survivors for eight years.
The tragic incident, said to be one of the world's worst industrial disasters, resulted in horrible deaths of many and many had to suffer multiple disease for many years now. The tragedy that killed about 20,000 people and another 5.7 lakh suffering bodily damages is still haunting the people as they find no options to meet their medical needs.
