Chennai: Gemini Communication (GCL), a telecom and networking company, and its product subsidiary Mobile WiMAX equipment manufacturer PointRed Telecom, have won the
435 crore contract from Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) for the deployment of mobile WiMAX application in India, reports Economic Times.
In August 2009, BSNL had received responses for the
1000-crore mobile Wi-Max tender from Gemini-PointRed, Huawei Telecommunications, ZTE, Samsung, Alvarion, Motorola and Harris Stratex.
Totally 7000 Mobile WiMax base station are to be deployed across BSNL networks in India, and as per the tender conditions upon technical qualification, four lowest bidders were to be selected for the rollout of the world's largest mobile WiMax network.
The Gemini-PointRed combo, which emerged as the lowest bidder, gets 40 percent of the contract. The balance is to be shared between ZTE, Harris Stratex and Alvarion respectively. BSNL's Mobile WiMax network once deployed, will be the largest network in the world. This network will be connecting various common service centres across India for delivering e-governance service to citizens and for commercial broadband services, reports Economic Times.
Now with WiMAX spectrum auction due in January for private operators, Mobile WiMAX equipment manufacturers, are preparing for their share in the
40,000 crore Indian mobile WiMax market. BSNL has already awarded first phase of the
270 crore mobile WiMax project to Huawei Telecommunication and Gemini-PointRed combination in January 2009.
