Food Grains that are Expensive in U.S. Considered as Cheap and Disdained in India
Thus, these food grains are much in demand among the westerners even if its demand declined in countries like India and Africa where cheap wheat and rice are abundantly available.
Krishna Byre Gowda Karnataka's Agriculture Minister exclaimed, "Ragi cultivation has declined precipitously in the state. Poor rainfall, plunging water tables, and changing preferences have all contributed," reports TNN.
Karnataka which is India’s leading producer of ragi accounts for more than 50 per cent of the overall production of this foodgrain.
In a big state like Karnataka where the food culture varies from one place to another, many people of North Karnataka and old Mysore insisted to include coarse grains like jowar, ragi and wheat along with rice when its government rolled out cheap rice scheme or “Anna Bhagya.”
In a way it shows that in India, coarse grains are still preferred over other food grains by most of the poor rural Indians who grew up with this ancient diet.
It is high time that Indians keep a check and value most of the nutritious food grains available sufficiently in the country before the western markets take complete hold of it.
